KINSHASA, December 14, 2020 MNCTVCONGO—— During his speech on the State of the Nation, delivered this Monday, December 14, 2020, before the two chambers of Parliament meeting in Congress the President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, announced the repatriation in June 2021 of the relics of the former Prime Minister, Patrice Emery Lumumba.
This’s in order to honor this national hero, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the country’s independence, said the Congolese Head of State. Lumumba will thus be offered a burial worthy of his rank.
Last September, Belgian justice gave the green light to return the remains of the former Congolese Prime Minister, Patrice Emery Lumumba, to his family. This is a tooth that should be returned after a favorable decision by the federal prosecutor.
First Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo after independence, Lumumba, who later became the hero of the independence of the Congo, was assassinated on January 17, 1961 with the help of Belgian henchmen. In 2000, one of these Belgians, the police commissioner Gérard Soete, recounted having cut and dissolved the body of Mr. Lumumba in acid.
In a documentary broadcast on German channel ARD the same year, Mr. Soete claimed to have kept Mr. Lumumba’s teeth, showing them. In 2016, a tooth was seized as part of an investigation opened by the federal prosecutor into the death of the former Prime Minister.
Last June 30, Juliana Lumumba (64), the latter’s daughter, sent a letter to King Philippe asking him that his father’s relics return “to the land of his ancestors”. The examining magistrate had decided that the object in question could be released. The family was allowed to go to the transplant for the tooth.
